Alcohol Ink Painting on Canvas

Can you paint with alcohol ink on Canvas?

One of the most common used substrates in fine art is canvas.  So, it's no wonder why one of the most frequently asked questions we hear is: "Can you paint with alcohol ink on Canvas?"  Canvas is a porous surface and when you try to paint directly on canvas with alcohol ink, the inks simply soak into the fibers.  Now, in some cases, this may be the desired effect. But in my opinion, the attraction of painting with alcohol ink is its fluid, flowing aspect that allows us to achieve a fluid, inky texture/feel.  With un-primed canvas, you lose the effect.

Below are some techniques for preparing canvas for alcohol ink painting.
